• Welcome!

The purpose of this site is to aquaint you with our imprint and to tell you about the books we sell. In an excess of reticence, perhaps, we keep the commercial pitch behind the green tabs above. Using them you can learn about us, our products, and other matters.

What you see in front of you is our blog—a free-wheeling discussion about books, reading, literature, language, and much else likely to interest our customers—people who read books. Please comment and participate.

And we'd really love it if you would buy our books.

Competing Covers

This collage is an attempt to capture the total display of books (on top) and of magazines (bottom panels) at a local CVS pharmacy. The chaos of titles is such that clicking through the image for an enlargement may be the only way to look at individual items—thus to reproduce the experience of standing before such a display and letting the attention be drawn.

Looking at this display, we notice, especially among the books on sale, that the author’s name is intended to draw the already knowledgeable buyer. We’ve had occasion to refer to that phenomenon before under the rubric of “author as brand” here. Magazine editors also use words to help them snag the potential buyer’s attention—as they also use naked skin.

Ah, poor publishers! It’s a jungle out there—and of our own making at that!

  1. How surprised am I to see that the covers I took to be probable classics were actually Harlequin Romances when seen up close!
