“The Isle of Dreams” by Charles P. Zaglanis (2007)
Mix one part Hornblower, one part Patrick O’Brian, and two dashes of Lovecraft and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what “The Isle of Dreams” by Charles P. Zaglanis is all about. Zaglanis does a fine job of creating a memorable setting aboard an English privateer whose grizzled salts are spooked by the prophetic gibberish from their fierce Captain’s nine-year-son. But at just 22 pages, the end feels a bit rushed. There was enough here in the setup for a novella’s worth of resolution, and even with the rushed ending the haunting atmosphere of the first 2/3rds of this story will stick with you.
Summary: Sailing the Southern Seas on a course straight for Hell.
